REFLECTION:
For my first quarter portfolio, I wanted to branch out of my comfort zone- this would be slightly difficult for me as I am a student athlete. Our softball team has just began our season where we start by traveling extensively. That being said, I am immensely proud of the work I have put out. I have grown in my print stories; gaining more confidence in interviews and digging deeper than just surface facts on different stories. I also feel like the ability to collaborate with other individuals (COPE and Senior night wrestling) allowed me to contribute to events I may not have otherwise been able to provide content for. I think that my biggest accomplishment were my two most recent softball projects. Having traveled for the past three weekends, I had to find a way to create content alongside my softball schedule. I was able to make this work within my first story- I interviewed my teammates after each of our first five games to create a multimedia piece. This piece altogether took roughly 8 hours to complete. All of the content within the story was created by me- I took the photos, created the graphics, captured the audio, conducted the interviews, and put together a cohesive story that offered a unique perspective rather than just another weekend recap story. Alongside this story I am also very proud of my first video project covering our home opener. I spent nearly an entire week learning how to use a GoPro effectively, as well as use editing software with the videos to create a final project. While pieces could have turned out better, I think that the piece shows what it's like in the dugout, locker room, and even on the field. I also got to work more extensively with iMovie and Adobe Premiere. Altogether this project took up about 5 hours to create, alongside the roughly 3 hours learning and finally the 6 hours shooting our games. I am eager to continue creating new content for TMN throughout the semester and this week I look forward to creating the following:
Division I softball cover story: Graphics/Infographics, statistics, and print story to explore the top ten ranked teams from preseason compared to how they are doing in competition now
FHSU Baseball Cover Story on MIAA opening games: Print story accompanied by graphics and possible audio interviews with outstanding players from the match up
FHSU Basketball MIAA Tournament Preview Story: Print story accompanied by graphics and audio interviews with coaches of both men's and women's basketball teams as they prepare for the upcoming MIAA tournament
